Phantom of the Opera Essay?! PLEASE help?

I have to write an essay in my french class about Gaston Leroux’s novel “Le Fantome De L’Opera” (Phantom of the Opera). My topic I have to support is how Erik isn’t completely evil.
My supporting points are :
1) he has compassion
2) shows remorse
3) resists the urge to kill

All I need are some specific examples from the novel as proof of my points, if anyone could help me out AT ALL. It would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks In Advance

Has compassion: He allows Christine to go, after realizing that she truly loves him, instead of adamantly refusing her to leave his lair. The things he does for Christine, he buys her luxurious items; tokens of his love to Christine.

Remorse: He does feel slightly guilty at the end for causing trouble, I guess. Not so sure about this one, sorry :)

Resists the urge to kill: he does not kill the Persian or Raoul as they are in the torture chamber. He could have went in, and killed them with the Punjab lasso, or unleashed other horrors on them. (I reckon he has more methods of torture…) But he didn’t. He also could have let the Persian drown when he initially tried to enter the lair by the lake, but he didn’t. He rescued the Persian, knowing that the fact that he was still living was due to him. However, this whole “resists urge to kill” wouldn’t be too strong, as he did kill Joseph Buquet, among many others.

Maybe you could also say that because he loves Christine, there is a part in his heart, deep down, that only wants to love and be loved. You could discuss the elation and feeling he had after being kissed by Christine, who was the first person, and woman, that actually loved him.

That’s all I can think of now, I’ll add on if I can think of more…

Good luck with your essay! I wish I was doing this!

This 1962 version of the horror story comes from Britain’s Hammer Films, and is unusually ornate for that studio. Herbert Lom gives an affecting performance as the disfigured composer who wreaks vengeance beneath an opera house. The film is low on violence and strong on the character’s psychological state, and the Phantom’s lair is very haunting in its own way. A subplot involving a police invest…

Although it’s not as bold as Oscar darling Chicago, The Phantom of the Opera continues the resuscitation of the movie musical with a faithful adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s blockbuster stage musical. Emmy Rossum glows in a breakout role as opera ingĂ©nue Christine Daae, and if phantom Gerard Butler isn’t Rossum’s match vocally, he does convey menace and sensuality in such numbers as “The Musi…
